Rom
1:1-7
Paul,
a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for
the gospel of God, 2 which He promised beforehand through His
prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning His Son, who was born
of a descendant of David according to the flesh, 4 who was declared
the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead,
according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through
whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the
obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake, 6
among whom you also are the called of Jesus Christ;
7
to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called as saints: Grace to you
and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
NASU
1:
PAUL ESTABLISHES HIS AUTHORITY TO WRITE THE BOOK OF ROMANS. VERSE 1-3
2:
PAUL ESTABLISHES THE AUTHORITY OF HIS MESSAGE. NAMEING JESUS CHRIST
AS THE MESSIAH FORETOLD IN THE OLD TESTEMENT. HE LINKS OLD AND NEW
TESTEMENT TOGETHER. (NOTHING NEW) VERSE 2-3
3:
DECLARES CHRIST TO BE JUST AS MUCH MAN AS IF HE’D NEVER BEEN GOD
AND JUST AS MUCH GOD AS IF HE’D NEVER BEEN MAN. VERSE 3-4
4:
JESUS BECAME MAN TO 1: TO BE THE SAVIOR
2: TO BE
THE MEDIATOR
3: TO BE
THE HIGH PRIEST
4: TO BE
THE KING
5:
DECLARES THAT SIN HAS BEEN PAYED FOR AND OFFERED TO MAN BY GODS
GRACE. VERSE 4-7
Rom
1:8-13
8
First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all, because your
faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world. 9 For God, whom
I serve in my spirit in the preaching of the gospel of His Son, is my
witness as to how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10 always in my
prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I
may succeed in coming to you. 11 For I long to see you so that I may
impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; 12
that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you,
each of us by the other's faith, both yours and mine.
NASU
1:
PAUL IS GREATFUL AND PRAISES THE ROMANS FOR THEIR FAITH. VERSE 8
2:
PAUL DEMONSTRATES THAT CHRISTIANITY IS A GROUP EFFORT. FELLOWSHIP AND
BUILDING EACH OTHER IN THE FAITH WERE KEYS TO DEVELOPING AND
SUSTAINING THE NEW TESTEMENT CHURCH. VERSE 9-11
3:
PAUL IS HUMBLE AND SEEKS TO GAIN ENCOURAGEMENT FROM THE CHURCH IN
ROME.
Rom
1:13-17
13
I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned
to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain
some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14
I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the
wise and to the foolish. 15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the
gospel to you also who are in Rome.
16
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for
salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the
Greek.
NASU
THESE
ARE THE THREE GREAT “I AM’S”
1:
I AM UNDER OBLIGATION. PAUL FELT RESPONSIBLE TO THE WORLD TO BRING
THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST TO EACH AND EVERY PERSON.
2:
I AM EAGER. PAUL HAD SO MUCH EXCITEMENT AND JOY TO BE FULFILLING GODS
WILL IN HIS LIFE. Acts 9:15-17
"Go,
for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the
Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; 16 for I will show him how
much he must suffer for My name's sake."
3:
I AM NOT ASHAMED. PAUL WAS NOT ASHAMED OF THE GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
AND TAUGHT THE GOSPEL EVERYWHER HE WENT. LIVING FOR CHRIST DISPITE
THE CONSEQUENCES. Acts
20:22-24
Acts
20: 23 except that the Holy Spirit solemnly testifies to me in every
city, saying that bonds and afflictions await me. 24 "But I do
not consider my life of any account as dear to myself, so that I may
finish my course and the ministry which I received from the Lord
Jesus, to testify solemnly of the gospel of the grace of God.
NASU
Rom
1:17
17
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith;
as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH."
NASU
1:
THIS IS THE PIVITAL PASSAGE FOR THE ENTIRE EPISTLE.
JOSH
McDOWELL – “VERSE 17 IS THE KEY TO UNLOCKING THE BOOK OF ROMANS.
THE THESIS OF THE ENTIRE EPISTLE”
2:
PAUL STATES THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD IS REVEALED FROM FAITH
TO FAITH.
NOT FAITH TO WORKS. THIS WAS THE STRUGGLE FOR MARTIN LUTHER. YOU CAN
NOT EARN YOUR PLACE IN HEAVEN. IT WAS AN UNDESERVED GIFT FROM GOD.
3:
PAUL SETS OUT IN THE NEXT 16 CHAPTERS TO PROVE: “THE JUST SHALL
LIVE BY FAITH.”
